A point repair fixes the spot. It does not fix the run

Here is the pattern we see repeatedly on established properties. A drain gives trouble. Somebody films it, finds a defect, digs down to that spot, replaces a short length and backfills. It works, and everybody is satisfied.

Two or three years later the same run gives trouble again, a metre or two further along, and the whole exercise repeats. That is not bad luck and it is not bad workmanship. It is what a point repair is.

The pipe either side of the repaired section has been in the ground precisely as long, laid the same way, in the same conditions. It is the same age and it is at the same stage of its life. Fixing the part that failed first does not change anything about the part that will fail second.

A liner works differently. It runs continuously through the entire section, sealing every joint along the way including the ones that had not started leaking yet. That is the difference between repairing this year's defect and retiring the run, and on a line that has already been opened once it is usually the cheaper of the two over any sensible timeframe.

Been dug up before?

Say so when you ring. A run that has already had one point repair is the strongest case there is for lining the whole length.

Local relining guide

Relining in Wahroonga

The rest of the run is the same age

A point repair leaves everything either side exactly as it was.

Same age, same conditions, same stage of life.

Which is why they recur

A second failure a metre along is the expected outcome, not bad luck.

Each one costs another call-out, another dig and another reinstatement.

A liner seals joints that have not failed yet

Continuous through the section, including the parts that were still fine.

That is the whole argument for it over another patch.

A collapse is a different job

A pipe that has lost its shape or its grade needs that length replaced.

We say so from the footage rather than partway through.

You keep the evidence

Footage before, footage after, and a written account of what was done.

Worth filing with the property papers.

What relining costs in Wahroonga

Fixed price agreed before anything starts. These are indicative 2026 ranges.

01

03

Full section relined $4,000 – $9,000

Priced on length and access rather than by the hour.

04

Junction reinstated $400 – $900

Step 01
Camera inspecting a drain before relining in Wahroonga

Filmed end to end

The whole section, not just the defect, because the argument for lining is about what the rest of the run looks like.

Step 02
Quoting a pipe relining job in Wahroonga

Quoted off the footage

Patch or full length, with the recording behind the recommendation rather than an opinion.

Step 03
Installing a pipe liner in Wahroonga

Cleaned and lined

The pipe prepared, the liner installed and cured in place, and any junctions reopened.

Step 04
Post-relining camera footage in Wahroonga

Filmed again

So you can see the finished surface end to end, and you keep both recordings.

Same drain, second time?

Get the whole run filmed rather than just the spot. The recommendation usually changes once you can see the rest of it.

What Wahroonga locals ask us before booking a plumber.

This line has been repaired before and it has gone again. Why?

Because the last repair almost certainly dealt with one point. Somebody dug down to the spot the camera showed, replaced a short piece, and backfilled. That fixes the defect they could see. It does nothing about the rest of a run that has been in the ground exactly as long and is exactly as old.

And a liner is different how?

It treats a length rather than a point. The sleeve runs continuously through the whole section, sealing everything along the way including the joints that were not yet leaking. It is the difference between repairing a defect and retiring a run.

How long does it last?

The material is rated at around fifty years. Practically, the useful part is that there is no joint left anywhere along the lined length for anything to enter through.

Does the pipe get narrower?

By a couple of millimetres, and it rarely matters. The new inner surface is smoother than the original, so flow generally ends up the same or better.

Can everything be relined?

No. A pipe that has collapsed, lost its shape or dropped out of grade needs that length replaced instead. The footage tells us which of those you have before you commit.

How long is the drain out of use?

Most residential jobs finish inside a day with the line back in service the same afternoon. A long or awkward run can go into a second.

What does relining cost in Wahroonga?

A patch over a single defect is $1,500 to $2,500. A full section is $4,000 to $9,000 depending on length and access. The camera inspection first is $250 to $450 and comes off the job if you proceed.
